STORY: Share | Acts 2:42-47
Pastor's Notes for Our Congregation
Welcome to a new season at church! As we turn the page into fall and start our new series, STORY, I'm excited to share some thoughts and encouragement with you based on Acts 2:42-47. Each week, we’ll dive into one central word. This week, our focus is Share—and we’re asking: Do I belong here?
Belonging: More Than a Feeling
It’s the beginning of the school year—students heading back to new classrooms, facing that age-old question: “Is there a place for me?” I remember being that new kid myself, and realizing quickly that belonging isn’t just about knowing where your locker is—it’s about knowing you’re not alone.
This is the same question we all ask—whether it’s our first day at school, our first day at work, or our first visit to church. Deep down, we want to know: Do I belong here?
The Gospel Picture: From Scattered to Family
The early chapters of Acts show us a remarkable moment in God’s story. After the Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost, thousands of people from different backgrounds and nations are brought together in Jerusalem. Their differences—language, culture, customs—didn’t determine who belonged. Instead, by God’s grace, they were gathered into one new family through Jesus.
As Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus, “You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household.”
Church isn’t just a collection of people in the same place—it’s a family, knit together by Christ. We don’t get to pick all the members of this family (just like our biological families!), but God uses our differences to teach us how to love. It's not about being a bag of marbles (separate but together), but about being grapes pressed together—impossible to separate, forming something new.
Devotion: Building Belonging Through Habits
Acts 2:42 tells us the early church "devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." That word “devoted” means holding on stubbornly—showing up not just when it feels good or convenient, but because we’re committed to one another.
Belonging isn’t just a feeling we wait for; it’s built through devotion—through regular worship, shared meals, prayer, and doing life together. When church is a habit, not just a place to drop in on holidays, it becomes home.
Moving from Attender to Family
Attendance is important—it puts us in the room. But true belonging gives us the permission and responsibility to walk through life together. In real family, we celebrate joys, carry each other’s burdens, and become known.
Ask yourself: If you missed a few weeks, who would notice? Who would reach out? And do you know the struggles and joys of those around you? If not, perhaps God is inviting you to take the next step toward deeper belonging.
Being the Church: Making Room and Sharing Life
Acts 2 gives us a picture of a church family that shares everything—time, resources, prayers, encouragement. This is “koinonia”—not just friendliness, but shared participation in one another’s lives.
We all have a role in making room for others, just as Jesus made room for us. Sometimes making room looks like remembering a name, saving a seat, sending a text, inviting someone to dinner, or simply noticing someone standing alone after service.
Next Steps: Engage and Belong
If you call this church your home, scoot over—make space at your table, in your group, and in your heart. There are many ways to deepen your participation:
Join a Wednesday night dinner.
Sign up for a small group or a class.
Serve in a ministry—choir, children’s ministry, student ministry, and more.
Take a class about church membership and what it means to belong.
If you’re new, unsure, or feeling hesitant, that’s okay. The important thing is to keep taking steps. The only reason any of us has a seat to offer is because Jesus gave everything for us first.
The Church is My Family
Let’s live so that everyone—no matter when or why they walk through our doors—can say, “In Christ, this church is my family.”
Let’s pray that God would keep making us more than a building or a crowd—that by the power of the Holy Spirit, we would be the family He designed us to be.
In Christ,
Pastor Andrew

Acts 2:42-47
Read this passage aloud as a group.
Key Themes for Discussion
1. The Question of Belonging
Pastor Jim shared, “The question is, do I belong here? That’s the question that all of us asked when we first came… That’s the question all the guests that we invited to church, that they're asking.”
Discussion: Why is the need to belong so deeply felt in us? How does the gospel speak to this longing?
2. Belonging and Devotion
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teachings and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer…”
Pastor Jim explained: “Luke describes it as devotion. It was built. It was grown as a result of habits… It was there in the repetition that this community became the church, that this church became their home, and that these people became family for one another.”
Discussion: What spiritual habits or rhythms help foster “devotion” in our lives and communities? Why do you think devotion, rather than feelings, is central to church life?
3. Church is Family
“[The church] is not, ‘yeah, I attend this church, I like this church…’ No, the church is my family, which means the people in my family can call on me and I can call on them.”
Discussion: In what ways have you experienced the church as family? What challenges and opportunities arise when we truly treat one another as brothers and sisters in Christ?
4. Participation and Vulnerability
“Attendance says, ‘I was there Sunday.’ Belonging says, ‘the church is my family. These people can count on me, and I’m willing to count on them.’”
“If you stay anonymous, nobody can disappoint you… but nobody can carry you either.”
Discussion: What does it look like to move from attending to truly belonging? What gets in the way of becoming more vulnerable and accountable in Christian community?
5. Making Room for Others
“The only reason that any of us has a seat to offer is because Jesus made room for us first.”
Discussion: How can you and your group make room for others—especially newcomers, those who feel left out, or people different from you? How might this shape the church’s witness?
6. The Holy Spirit’s Role
“The Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. They could make room, but it was the Lord that moved hearts.”
Discussion: How do we balance intentional hospitality and dependence on God’s Spirit to grow and deepen the church?
Next Steps
Personal Reflection: Who in your life needs an invitation into deeper community? What intentional step can you take this week to include or reach out to them?
Group Challenge: As a group, identify one tangible way your community can “make room” for someone new this month.
Closing Prayer
Ask God for the courage to be devoted, the grace to welcome others, and the eyes to see His family as He does. Thank Him for the gift of belonging through Jesus Christ.
